Learn before you ape in โ crypto education

โ ๏ธ Important: Everything on this site is educational. We are not financial advisors. Cryptocurrency carries extreme risk โ you can lose 100% of what you invest. Only invest what you can afford to lose completely.
1. What is cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency is a digital asset secured by cryptography that exists on a public blockchain. Unlike regular money, no central bank controls it. The most famous examples are Bitcoin and Ethereum.
A memecoin or altcoin is any crypto other than Bitcoin or Ethereum. There are hundreds of thousands of them. 99% will fail.
Key terms you'll hear
- Presale/ICO: buying a token before it launches publicly. High risk, highest reward.
- Rug pull: the developers steal all the liquidity and disappear.
- Honeypot: a token you can buy but never sell.
- LP (Liquidity Pool): funds locked in a DEX so people can trade the token.
- Market cap: total value of all tokens in circulation.
- Doxxed: the team's real identity is publicly known.
โ ๏ธ 2. The real risks
Most content online makes crypto sound easy. It's not. Here's what nobody tells you:
๐ฅ
Volatility
Memecoins can drop 90% in a single day. Even "safe" coins like Bitcoin have lost 80% in bear markets.
๐ญ
Rug pulls
Developers remove liquidity and vanish. 1 in 3 new memecoins is a rug.
๐ฏ
Honeypots
You can buy, but you can never sell. Your money is locked forever.
๐
Hacks
Exchanges get hacked. Wallets get drained. One wrong click costs everything.
๐
Slow bleeds
Not every loss is a rug. Many tokens just slowly die after launch hype fades.
โ๏ธ
Regulations
Your country's laws may change overnight. Some projects get banned.
3. How to spot a rug pull
Rug pulls follow predictable patterns. Learn these red flags:
- Anonymous team with no history. If the devs won't show their face, they can disappear with your money.
- Liquidity NOT locked. If LP isn't locked for 1+ year, they can remove it anytime.
- Owner can mint new tokens. Check for a "mint" function โ this creates infinite dilution.
- High taxes (above 10%). Excessive buy/sell tax is a red flag for exit scams.
- Owner holds 30%+ of supply. They can dump at any time, crashing the price.
- No audit. Legitimate projects pay for CertiK, SolidProof, or Hacken audits.
- Fake Telegram engagement. 50,000 members but only 3 real comments = bot inflation.
- Blacklist function in contract. They can block your wallet from selling.
๐ก
Pro tip: Use the free
ApeDegen Rugcheck Bot to scan any contract on BSC/ETH/Solana in 3 seconds. It checks all these red flags automatically.
4. Presale red flags
Presales offer the biggest potential gains โ and the biggest risk of total loss. Watch for:
- No whitepaper or a whitepaper that's clearly AI-generated nonsense
- Unrealistic roadmap promising partnerships with Binance, CoinMarketCap listing on day 1, etc.
- Pressure tactics like "last 24h" countdown timers and "only 1% left" FOMO
- Guaranteed returns โ nothing in crypto is guaranteed
- Unlimited vesting โ team tokens unlock all at once, not vested over 2+ years
- No KYC โ if the team isn't KYC-verified by a 3rd party, add caution
- Hard cap too high โ raising $10M for a project with no product is suspicious
5. How to protect yourself
โ
DO
- Only invest what you can lose entirely
- Diversify across multiple positions
- Use a hardware wallet for large bags
- Verify every URL before connecting your wallet
- Take profits โ don't be greedy
- Set stop-losses when possible
- Scan every contract before buying
- Read whitepapers, not just Telegram chats
โ DON'T
- Invest money you need for rent/food
- Use leverage until you've mastered spot trading
- Trust random Telegram "signals" groups
- Keep large sums on exchanges
- Click links from unknown DMs
- Share your seed phrase with anyone โ ever
- Buy on hype without checking the contract
- FOMO into a coin after a 500% pump
6. The DYOR (Do Your Own Research) checklist
Before buying any coin, go through this list:
โ Contract address verified on BscScan / Etherscan / Solscan
โ LP is locked for 12+ months (check PinkSale/Unicrypt)
โ Audit from recognized firm (CertiK, SolidProof, Hacken, Pessimistic)
โ Team is doxxed OR KYC-verified by 3rd party
โ Honeypot test passed (use Rugcheck Bot)
โ Buy/sell tax under 10%
โ Top holder owns less than 15% of supply
โ Liquidity above $10,000
โ Website works, whitepaper is coherent
โ Real Twitter/Telegram engagement (not bot inflation)
โ No red flags from on-chain history (previous rugs by same deployer)
7. The psychology of crypto losses
Losing money hurts โ but losing to a scam hurts worse. Protect your mental health:
- You will lose money. Every crypto investor loses money sometimes. It's part of the game.
- Don't chase losses. "I'll just make it back on the next one" leads to bigger losses.
- Take breaks. If you're obsessing over charts, step away for 48 hours.
- Never borrow to invest. If a position goes to zero, you still owe the money.
- Talk to someone. Crypto addiction and gambling-like behavior are real risks.
8. Where to get help
If you've lost significant money or feel addicted:
- GamCare โ gamcare.org.uk โ free gambling support (UK + international)
- Gamblers Anonymous โ gamblersanonymous.org โ worldwide chapters
- Report scams to chainabuse.com or your local cybercrime unit
- Mental health: if you're having thoughts of self-harm after losses, call your local crisis line. Money can be recovered. You cannot.
